Joe M. Slowensky
Chapman University

A native of Houston, Texas, Joe Slowensky received a BS in Radio-TV-Film Communication from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA from USC’s School of Cinema-Television. As a screenwriter and producer, he has been commissioned to write movies of the week for ABC, the Disney Channel, and CBS Television. Slowensky began his career working in development of movies and miniseries at CBS. His first produced feature screenplay, the CBS Sunday Night Movie, Miracle in the Woods, was seen in more than 14.5 million homes and received the highest ratings of the week (except for the World Series). His second CBS film, Three Secrets, also won the ratings battle during the highly competitive May sweeps period. Slowensky is a member of the exclusive Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Writers Peer Group, where he’s a voting juror for the annual prime-time Emmy Awards. He is also an emeritus member of the Writers Guild of America, West.

In his current role as Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Faculty Affairs at Chapman University, Slowensky currently leads the Chapman Diversity Project, an institution-wide initiative designed to enhance the culture of diversity and inclusion on Chapman’s campus. In its fourth year of implementation, the transformative project has grown to include over 300 volunteers and 15 task forces and advisory groups, with representation from faculty, staff, students, administration and trustees. Slowensky oversees the processes for defining and measuring Chapman’s institutional effectiveness as the university’s accreditation liaison officer (ALO). He also supervises institutional research and the faculty processes for hiring, contracts, tenure and promotion, development and annual review. Prior to joining the Provost’s office, Slowensky served for seven years as Chair of the Film Division of Chapman’s Lawrence and Kristina Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. As a Professor of Film and Media Arts, Slowensky continues to teach courses in Screenwriting.
